Sugar.

Just say No! to Valentine M&M's.

Even though my Whole30 start date isn't for another month (Feb 10th), I've already started to fall down the rabbit hole with reading about and then changing my eating habits based on what I am learning in preparation.  I also happen to be reading a very interesting and very disturbing book called Salt, Sugar, Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us, which is all about how the food industry has changed the way we eat and the way we believe food should taste.  The foods they create (I struggle to use the word make as most of their ingredients are not found in nature) are laden with just the right amount of salt or sugar or fat or all three to make them irresistible to the human brain and taste buds.  And pretty much everything they make is linked with increased risks of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, just to name a few.

The section on high-fructose corn syrup alone will give you nightmares.

When I posted my New Year's resolutions last week, one of my best friends (who also happens to live here in Canada) saw that I was planning to do a Whole30 and asked what it was all about.  After reading her a brief description about the program she said she was wanted to do it, too!  And she was starting it on Monday, 6 weeks earlier than me.

Is it weird to be jealous of her starting her 30 days of no sugar or alcohol or processed foods?

To show her support (and to help gear up for my Whole30), I stopped putting honey in my cup(s) of coffee on Monday morning.  And then I waved Lee away when he offered me a piece of chocolate later in the day.  And then I skipped the afternoon Smirnoff Ice with my mother-in-law (which has 32 grams!! of sugar).  And then I said no to dessert after dinner that night.

And when I woke up Tuesday morning after limiting my sugar intake the day before, I had a wicked headache.  I felt hung over despite not having a drop of alcohol the night before.

Since I'm not actually doing the Whole30 just yet, I'll leave my speculations as to why I felt so terrible on most mornings this week until I'm knee-deep into those 30 days.

How about you?  Do you eat a lot of junk food?  Drink a lot of soda (regular or diet)?  Does the Whole30 sound interesting you?  Or do you think I'm crazy?!

Weekly Workouts:  Monday - TRX! Plus shoulder press + tricep extensions (using approx 10lbs clevis x 2) + push-ups + walking lunges. Tuesday - Run! 10 miles/1:30 ON THE TREADMILL! Various hill grades ranging from 1%-5%.  I think that is my longest treadmill run ever.  Luckily my friend has WiFi at her house so I watched The Hunger Games on Netflix while I ran. Wednesday - Nike Training Club! 30 minutes/Extreme Full Body Workout. Holy shit, it was hard. Lots of burpees and lunges and more burpees.  I was a sweaty mess when I finished. Thursday - Run! 1.25 miles/10 minutes while I waited for my friend and then... Spin! 50 minute class. Friday - Rest day!

  1. I do eat sugar, but I balance it with super healthy foods- kale salads, plenty of salmon, whole grains, and veggies veggies veggies. I try not to deprive myself of anything, I think moderation is the way to go! But I think what you're doing sounds very smart.

  2. I'm with Lauren on the sugar in moderation. Even on the 12WBT I factored a fun size chocolate into my evening calorie allowance, I just think chocolate is too good to give up. I'm interested in the Whole 30, but I'm not sure if I could actually stick with it. I'm looking forward to hearing how it works for you.

You've joined the Nike Training Club too! The workouts are hard, but I really like it.

  4. I don't drink soda, I gave up diet coke when we were trying to get pregnant the first time. And my headaches went away once I gave it up :)

I have problems with sugar, as well. Mostly in the form of simple carbs. I love crackers, cereal, bread, etc. I can say no to candy or chocolate at a store, or to desserts (although it's difficult), but it's very hard for me to give up all simple carbs.

thanks for the book rec. I have such an interest in nutrition and am always trying to better myself, but I could do better.

  5. I eat WAY too much sugar. And not 'hidden' sugar. Just too many sweets. I am currently nursing a 6 month old and all I can think about is sugar. Sugar, sugar, sugar. Did I mention sugar?
