I really didn't think I was going to keep my resolution of reading ten books last year as I lost steam sometime over the summer with my consistent nightly reading. As the middle of December neared, though, I remembered my resolution and decided to try to cram in two more books before 2014 rolled around. And I did it! Here are the last four books that I read in 2013.
- The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Absolutely loved this book. I loved the storyline. I loved her style of writing. I still think about this book five months after I finished it! (thanks for the recommend, Sarah!!)
- Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood. I loved that last book so much that I wanted to immediately read another book written by the same author. And it was good, but I think I should've read something else in between to sort of cleanse my palate. I really do love the way she writes, though.
- The Engagement by Chloe Hooper. Eh. Didn't love it. Found it predictable and odd. And the style of writing did nothing for me.
- The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker. Really liked this book! I started reading it over the summer, stopped reading it for some reason and then picked it up again right before we came to Canada. And then I couldn't put it down! Another book I haven't stopped thinking about since I finished it.
- She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb. This book is amazing. Loved it. Sad and haunting and wonderful. It kept me up late into the night reading and then kept me up even later thinking about it while trying to fall asleep. I've read most of his other books years ago and I think I'll revisit those ones, too.
I have also read 'She's Come Undone. I should read it again because I can't remember much about it, but I do remember that it helped me change my perspective on some things. I just finished 'Ender's Game', which was pretty good - another teen dystopian novel but this one came out in the 70s I think and it has great reviews! If you haven't read 'Unbroken' yet, I highly recommend it. My all-time favorite book and it's a true story! Also, '11/22/63' by Stephan king was awesome! It's not scary, but it is super suspenseful, teaches history about JFK and a good thriller.
ReplyDeleteThe Age of Miracles has been on my list for ages! I actually had a huge mix up when I was reading The Fault in Our Stars and it took me until about 4 chapters from the end to realize I had the synopsis from an entirely different book in mind the whole time I was reading it & there was no slowing of time in the characters' futures. Excuse my language, but it was such a total mind fuck.
ReplyDeleteAs a Gone Girl fan, I checked out Sharp Objects (Gillian Flynn's first novel) at the library over the holiday break. I started it yesterday and I'm halfway finished. I can't wait for my train ride home to read more. I bet I finish it tonight! It's a page turner just like Gone Girl. I also recommend: The Things that Keep Us Here by Clara Buckley, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein and the Light Between Oceans by ML Steadman.
