Being candid.

Alice enjoying her baby lounger.

So I know this is the all-baby-all-the-time blog lately but that pretty much sums up my life right now.  I promise to get back to yummy recipes and heart-pumping workouts and other interesting stuff besides baby very soon.  At least, I hope to.

I think I mastered something during the overnight feeding last night.  Now I know you breast-feeding pros will be like Pssssh, amateur! when I tell you what I am about to tell you but hey, that's okay.  I am thriving off of small victories lately.  So anyway, I think I have finally mastered the side-lying breast feeding position!  For some reason, this position has always felt so awkward to me and Alice seemed to struggle a bit to latch on but a little repositioning and some readjusting put us in perfect harmony to get her fed while letting me do some light sleeping during the 4AM feeding.  And I woke up feeling much more rested than had I fed her in the chair next to our bed.  Small victories, you guys.

This morning we got out of the house for a walk.  On our way back we stopped at my favorite bakery for some baked goods and we saw a guy there with his baby girl.  His baby was happy and smiling and laughing and interacting as her dad ordered his coffee and my husband looked at me and gave me the When is our kid going to do that? look.  His daughter was 8 months old and, when I told him how old Alice was, he said Ya, that's not a very fun age.  I remember when our daughter was that age and I asked myself what I'd gotten myself into!

Thank god for his candidness.

Life with a newborn isn't all sunshine and snuggles and rainbows!  It's a lot of work and people who say otherwise are either lying or crazy.  But we really are enjoying it.

No really.  We are.

Alice sacked out in the stroller.

We're dealing with a bit of baby acne over here.  Yesterday I put some breast milk on it as I've heard that works but any other tips?  I've stopped putting lotion on her face to see if that will help.  And, now that her umbilical cord has fallen off and her belly button has healed, we're giving Alice her first real bath tonight!  She's excited, I'm sure.

  1. A newborn is hard work! We've said that this is the hardest thing we've ever done. But at the same time it is fun :)

Lulu loves the bath, she blisses out, floating back & forth. The bath is a great distraction/activity during the witching hour. Hope Alice loves it to. She looks so cute in the photos. I love the little hoodie.

  2. Oh my goodness. She is so sweet, acne and all! And I would just leave it alone, as it is just hormonal and will clear up on its own. My little guys had it too.

Also, praise to candidness! I agree with the guy. Newborn phase is not my favorite either. My youngest is almost 8 months and it is a wonderful age!

And congrats on the side-lying breastfeeding position. It is a lifesaver and took me a while to get the hang of. But now that is the only way I breastfeed at night!

  3. Congratulations on your breast feeding position victory! I was never able to breast-feed on that position! You are right, a newborn is a lot of work, nights with no sleep' worries but on the other hand there are so many rewards moments that helps you go through the difficult ones.Alice is looking so cute!

  4. Love the pictures of Alice, expecially her little hand in yours. Perfect! She is beautiful, don't worry, the acne will go away eventually. xoxo

  5. I remember a few hormone fueled bursts of tears, mostly in the evenings, when I wondered what we had gotten ourselves into.

It does get better. Nolan is almost five months, and is super fun. I think when they can start smiling, you feel like they appreciate all the diaper changes and sleepless nights :)

I think that was at about 8 weeks?
