Going against the grain.

(I opened the drawer to get my keys and saw this. Lee stocked up, not me!)

I CRASHED when I got home from work this morning.  Like hard.  I got home at 7:45 a.m., poured myself a bowl of cereal, turned on the T.V..... and barely finished my breakfast before I was fast asleep on the couch.  Fast-forward to eight hours later at 4:30 p.m. when Lee was walking in the door from work... and I hadn't even changed out of my work clothes.  I was exhausted!

We had dinner out on the town tonight.  I barely knew what day it was when I woke up this afternoon let alone how to work the oven so when Lee walked in and said he wanted to take me out for dinner... it was music to my ears.  We had beers and frites and salads and a chocolate torte and 'special coffees.'  It was perfect.

Last night was surprisingly slow at work which gave me time to peruse Etsy on my iPhone (yes, there is an app for that).  Let me just say... I could spend a small fortune on Etsy.  I bought some rings.  And I can't wait for them to get here.  I see myself stacking this ring with my wedding ring, which is a simple gold band.  I do not have a diamond wedding ring.... and this is by choice.  It just isn't my style.  I wanted a wedding ring that was me... not something I thought society said I needed to have to get married.  So I went with my gut and got what I wanted.  And... it's funny.  When I tell people that I'm married... they immediately look to my ring finger.... and I'm sure they're shocked not to see a sparkly 'rock' encased in platinum.  Nope.  Just a brushed gold band.  Just like I wanted.  It's fun going against the grain of society's expectations.  Try it.  You might like it!

Check out this Etsy shop.  I love ALL of her bags.  And she makes them by hand!  I am pretty sure I'll buy one... but I'm having a hard time deciding on which one to get.  Any thoughts?  I'm leaning towards the yellow bicycle one but is it too young-looking for a 32 year old?  Remember... I'm really young at heart. :-)

Do you have a story where you went against the grain of what society expected of you?  I feel like I have a lot of stories like this.  I'm fire-y.  What can I say?  It must be the red hair.  I think not getting a diamond-solitare-baguette-platinum-engraved-blah-blah-blah is one of my favorite 'going against the grain' instances, though.  Do what YOU like, not what is expected of you (within reason, of course).

Do you love Etsy?  If so... please share your favorite shops!  I love Etsy.  You can find my favorite jewelry designer here (who used to sell on Etsy).  No joke.  I could spend hours and hours perusing all that Etsy has to offer.  It's an addiction!

  1. I can get myself into some serious trouble with etsy. :)

I worked at a jewelry store for a year before meeting Ryan and I loved it there. I fell in love with rubies and got so amused at how many couples I thought would fail just by the conversations regarding the diamonds some women want. I told Ry within a month of dating him that I would much rather have a fun sort of ruby than a diamond. I hope he remembers when the time comes. :)

  2. I have all kinds of go against rule that society sets for me stories. Wow, that was a mouthful of a sentence. :) Our wedding was pretty against rule in some ways...my dress was a simple $99 david's bridal dress, we got food from Safeway, flowers from Safeway...we kept it simple but the view was epic! My mind is at a blank as far as specific stories but I'm a big fan of go against the flow! Love your ring pic!
