Cross-Country.


While on vacation in such a cold place, I often have to get a bit creative when it comes to doing a workout.  When the temperatures are below freezing for most of the day and the gravel roads near my in-laws house are frozen solid, it can be hard to find motivation to lace up my shoes and head out the door.  After running both Saturday and Sunday, I was ready for a different kind of cardio workout.

And then my mother-in-law dug out her old cross-country ski gear.

You'd think that growing up in a state that thrives on winter sports I'd at least have tried cross-country skiing.  Nope.  This was going to be my maiden voyage on skinny skis.  I laced up the vintage boots, grabbed the ski poles and buckled myself in.  So far, so good!

I really had no idea what I was doing out there.  My only exposure to cross-country skiing had been messing around on my step-dad's stationary ski machine back in the 90's.  Surprisingly, it wasn't that hard to figure out although I'm sure I looked like a hot mess as I attempted to gracefully ski across the frozen and snow-covered fields.

Luckily my parents-in-law live way out in the country so no one was around to witness the spectacle!  

Workouts:  Monday - Rest day.  Tuesday - Cross-country skiing for 40 minutes!  Wednesday - TRX in the AM. 60 minutes of cross-country skiing in the PM with my friend, C.  Thursday - Run! 4 miles.  Friday (tomorrow) - TRX + lunges/squats/push-ups/sit-ups.

  2. I don't know how you've managed to run so often in the snow & ice. I can barely walk on icey/snowy roads, let alone running. I'd be far to afraid of slipping.

I'm still here up in Alaska and we've had tons of snow days and I thought I'd be about to go backcountry skiing from here, but it's just not really feasible with time and location, but they have a skate ski track that they / I groom and it's between a mile and a mile and a half and I had never skated before but it's a GREAT work out and I feel great after I do it! It's so hard to motivate though when it's snowy and cold! Nice job making it happen out there! I think I'm going to have a rude awakening when I go home and try to work out or ski like I was. We'll have to corss country ski sometime when you come to UT!
