Dad & Daughter. City Creek, SLC. May 2012.
Alice and I have a case of the Mondays. Wait. Can a stay-at-home mom and a 10-week old really have a case of the Mondays? I think so. We are transitioning from vacation-mode in sunny SLC to back-to-reality mode in rainy Boston. We have laundry to do. The apartment needs to be cleaned. Our main squeeze is out of town for work. Boo hoo, right?
Okay, enough complaining. I know. We have it pretty good.
Okay, enough complaining. I know. We have it pretty good.
Here's what is awesome about being back from vacation, though. I have so much reality T.V. to catch up on! Confession time: I am sort of a reality T.V. junkie. Not the Idol/Dancing/Jersey/Biggest Loser-type of junkie, though. I am more of a Housewives/Bachelor/Bethenny/Intervention/Project Runway addict. I know. It is pretty embarrassing to admit. Don't get me wrong, though. I know it is crap. My husband likes to tease me for watching it and I don't blame him. It is not educational. It is not mentally stimulating. It is not really reality. So why watch it? To unwind. To decompress. To not think. That's why.
When I worked in the ICU at Cedars-Sinai or the ER at Mass General, I needed to not think after work. I needed to decompress after taking care of sick people for 12 hours. I needed the nothing of reality T.V. And, now that I am not working, why still watch? Here is my rationale for watching it now. I spend A LOT of time breastfeeding. Like more than 4 hours a day. Sure. I could listen to NPR or read a book or magazine or think about the future. But 4 hours is a lot of time. More than you think. So I do indulge in a bit of crap while I feed Alice or after she goes to bed. When she is up and happy and smiling, though, I turn that junk T.V. off and spend time with her... reading, talking, singing, and smiling.
Because that is way better than reality T.V.
Do you watch reality T.V.? What T.V. shows do you watch regularly? I have 3 or 4 reality shows that I watch regularly and then real T.V. shows like Mad Men, True Blood, and Bill Maher. I've heard Downton Abbey is awesome... but do I need another T.V. show in my life?
I love Love LOVE the real housewives of anything. This new Jersey season is really juicy. You are so right. Its mindless tv and I love just being entertained and not having to pay close attention to a plot.
ReplyDeletei do all the real housewives shows. but orange county is definitely my favorite!
ReplyDeleteand of course, sadly, the kardashians. i just have to watch it.
Bethenny and the Orange Co housewives are my fav! Those are the only TV shows I watch, and yes they are perfect for decompressing.
ReplyDeleteI felt pretty sad coming "home" as well. I think that is why you feel sad. Especially with Lee away.
ReplyDeleteI do like some reality TV - in particular "Say Yes to the Dress" -but I don't have access to those things over here. Bummer!
I would certainly watch more TV if we had it. Instead, I am addicted to the internet!
My new show is Breaking Pointe on the CW. BBC did 6 episodes about Ballet West. Filmed in SLC. Not really a "reality" show, but how much work it really is to be a professional dancer. Plus, they show downtown SLC, the mountains and other sites in Utah. AND I maybe on one of the episodes... so I have to watch.
ReplyDeleteSorry that your hubby is out of town. But make the most of it, catch up on your shows, spend time with your little one and relax.
XOXO, Miss you, mom
I love Mad Men. I download the Bill Maher pod cast & listen to it when I walk Lulu. I've also love Parks & Recreation, but I did work for a city planning department so that maybe more geeky fun than anything else, he he. As Jen suggested, Say yes to the dress is awesome, give that a crack.
