Seeing red.

I love makeup and skin care and beauty products and trying new beauty trends.  Back in the day when I was a makeup artist in L.A., I was much more creative with the makeup I wore.  Now?  I mix it up a bit but generally I keep things pretty simple in my day-to-day makeup routine.  When I saw red lips popping up in the fall fashion magazines, I got excited!  Red is difficult to master and a really glossy, super pigmented red is a ton of upkeep for a night out (you'll be checking the mirror constantly to make sure your lipstick isn't all over your teeth or bleeding off your lip line).  I love the idea of a lip stain to get the hint of red but without all the commitment and upkeep that comes with wearing a full-blown lipstick.

As Lee and I sat at Cafe Fixe yesterday, drinking lattes and reading the NY Times, I came across the Style section with a tip for getting those perfectly stained cherry-red lips.
  1. Start with a lip balm to soften your lips.  I love Burt's Bees Beeswax lip balm.
  2. Using a lip brush and red lipstick, press the color onto your lips.  I used Revlon Matte 'In The Red.'  Then, blot the excess with a tissue.
  3. This wasn't on the NY Times tips, but I follow up with another layer of Burt's Bees to keep my lips feeling soft as I feel lipstick (especially matte) can be drying.
  4. Touch up any mistakes or coloring-out-of-the-lines with a bit of concealer.
  5. Keep the remaining makeup light and natural.  A pop of color on the cheeks and black mascara are all you'll need.

I went light on lip color this morning as I was heading out to Whole Foods and not da' club but if it were date night with my husband, I'd add a bit more color (for a matte look) or top it off with a high-shine gloss.

Would you/do you wear red lipstick?  Matte or glossy?  Stain or full-blown red?  I love a classic red lip but lately I'm into the more subdued lip stain, like you've just finished eating a red Otter Pop.  So cute.

  1. The red look so good on you!! I don't think I could pull it off but if I was ever confident enough, I would probably go matte!
