People suck.

I'm going to be a little bit negative here.  I can't help myself.  So this is a picture of our dumpster.  And this is why I think most people suck.  Yesterday (and today!) I watched a guy dump the following items into our dumpster:
  • Mattress.
  • Computer monitor.
  • T.V.
  • Kitchen chairs.
  • Lawn chairs.
  • Duffel bag x 2.
  • Plywood (perfectly reusable).
  • Bags of clothes.
  • And to top it all off... he tossed his cigarette butt on the ground and drove off.
This is the perfect example of pure laziness.  ALL OF THOSE THINGS CAN GO TO PLACES LIKE THE GOODWILL OR SALVATION ARMY!  But this dude took the 'easy' way out and just dumped it all in the trash.  And, to top it off, I'm pretty sure that asshole doesn't even live in our building.  I know what you're thinking.  Why didn't I stop him when I saw him dumping all that stuff in our dumpster?  I'll admit.  I should've.  I'm kicking myself for not stepping up and saying something.  I chickened out, I guess.  And I would've been yelling at him in the parking lot from my third floor balcony.  And maybe what he's doing is perfectly legal just morally reprehensible.  This is why I sometimes have no hope in humanity.

Or maybe I just care too much.

What do you think?  Do you attempt to take reusable items to places like the Goodwill?  I absolutely do.  When I moved from L.A. to S.L.C., I rented a U-Haul to take ALL of my unwanted things to the Salvation Army.  I can't, in good conscience, throw perfectly good stuff away.  Away to a landfill where it will stay forever.  The thought makes me sick.

  2. I agree. I hate to see people that don't take the time to sort their stuff (cardboard in with plastic, etc).

As an aside, I was excited to come here because they are so Green in Germany I had heard.

Now that I am here, I see they think you don't use much. We get "trash" pick up only ever 3 weeks or so (makes for a smelly trash container!) and then other weeks are paper recycling pick up, and yard/lawn waste. Glass recycling containers are out and about in the community.

So their system isn't perfect, either. It think it just encourages people to dispose of trash elsewhere because the bins are small and overflowing by the time the truck arrives.
